Experiencing “Sideways Photo” Displays When Uploading from Your Apple® Mobile Device?

We know of a couple workarounds you can use! The issue of sideways photos displaying in the MLS, which were uploaded from Apple® mobile devices (iPad/iPhone) has been reported to Realcomp recently. This issue appears to be widespread among Apple® users and seems to be related to the native camera app built into those devices. Using a different camera app instead of the one provided with the device is one suggestion we found online for resolving the issue.

Another involves converting the photos you've taken with the device through a separate photo app. Mr. Tim Thibault, our Customer Care Supervisor, shares the following tip: "I've had success with a freeware app from www.fotosizer.com. I've used this for resizing photos and converting them in batches (rather than making the same modifications to a batch of photos on an individual basis)." Tim's advice is to convert your photo files to the ".bmp" format and then back to the ".jpg" format.

For you techies, Tim shares the reason these steps resolve the issue: "This fixes the sideways photo issue since the 'exif' information is written as part of the .bmp file and is adopted as the actual orientation of the bitmap. After converting the photo back to .jpg, the 'this-end-up' data in the exif information coincides with the actual image rotation, thus resolving the issue."

Additionally, Tim says this particular app can assist MLS Subscribers who desire to downsize photos that are too large to upload to the MLS since the app allows the user to determine the output size.

Another option, if you are unable to access a third-party site, is to rotate photos on your computer using a photo editor already installed, such as Paint or Photoshop.  After you rotate the photo in the photo editor, click on “File" and “Save As" to save the changes. Because you are saving this as a new photo, this eliminates the issues with the exif rotation information. Using this method, however, requires you to update photos one at a time, but can be handy if you need a quick correction but are unable to use an external site.

If you try these steps and continue to experience the sideways photo issue, please let us know. You can reach Realcomp's Customer Care Department seven days a week by phone at (866) 553-3430 or e-mail at support@realcomp.com. We’re happy to help!
